André Carson (D-IN-7) is one of the first Muslim members of Congress, representing Indianapolis and serving his ninth term.
André D. Carson is the U.S. Representative for Indiana's 7th Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in a 2008 special election to succeed his grandmother Julia Carson. He represents a district covering most of Indianapolis and Marion County and is serving his ninth term. A graduate of Concordia University Wisconsin and Indiana Wesleyan University, Carson previously worked as a state excise police officer and in the Department of Homeland Security. He was the second Muslim elected to Congress. In the 119th Congress, he sits on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, and the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and China, focusing on transit, civil rights, national security, and infrastructure.
