Andrew Kim is the junior U.S. Senator from New Jersey, a Democrat sworn in January 2025 after winning the seat vacated by Bob Menendez. A Marlton, New Jersey native and son of Korean immigrants, Kim earned degrees from the University of Chicago and completed a doctorate at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. He served as a civilian adviser in Afghanistan, strategist at the State Department and USAID, and director for Iraq on the Obama-era National Security Council before being elected to the U.S. House in 2018 from New Jersey's 3rd District, where he served three terms. An image of him quietly cleaning up the Capitol Rotunda after the January 6, 2021 attack became a viral symbol of civic care. Kim is the first Korean American elected to the U.S. Senate. In the 119th Congress, he serves on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committees. He has introduced legislation on nuclear energy at military installations and Indo-Pacific security partnerships, maintaining a focus on national security and alliance-building.
