Ben Ray Luján is the junior U.S. Senator from New Mexico, a Democrat elected in 2020 to succeed retiring Tom Udall. Born in Nambe, New Mexico, and raised in a family with deep roots in state politics—his father was longtime speaker of the New Mexico House—Luján earned a degree from New Mexico Highlands University and worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory and on the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission before being elected to the U.S. House in 2008 from the 3rd District. Over six House terms, he chaired the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee during the 2018 cycle and rose to Assistant Speaker. In the 119th Congress, he serves on Commerce, Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions; Indian Affairs; Budget; and Finance committees, with a ranking member position on the Agriculture Subcommittee on Food and Nutrition, Specialty Crops, Organics, and Research. He serves as Assistant Democratic Leader and has advocated for rural broadband expansion, health care access, Native American treaty rights, and the role of national laboratories. He recovered from a stroke in 2022.
