Bill Hagerty is the junior U.S. Senator from Tennessee, a former U.S. Ambassador to Japan and private-equity executive.
William Francis Hagerty IV, Tennessee's junior senator since 2021, brings extensive diplomatic and business experience to Capitol Hill. A Gallatin, Tennessee, native who graduated from Vanderbilt University with undergraduate and law degrees, Hagerty worked as a management consultant at Boston Consulting Group, including significant time in Tokyo, before pursuing private-equity investing. He served as a White House Fellow in the George H. W. Bush administration and as Tennessee's commissioner of economic and community development under Governor Bill Haslam, then as U.S. Ambassador to Japan from 2017 to 2019 during the Trump administration. In the 119th Congress, Hagerty serves on the Appropriations, Banking, Foreign Relations, and Rules committees. He has concentrated his work on strengthening U.S.-Japan relations, promoting Indo-Pacific economic engagement, advancing trade policy beneficial to Tennessee manufacturers, and supporting the state's growing auto and health-care industries.
