Carlos Gimenez is a Republican U.S. Representative from Florida's 28th District, a former Miami-Dade County mayor and career firefighter representing Miami's southwestern suburbs.
Carlos Antonio Gimenez is the U.S. Representative for Florida's 28th Congressional District, a Republican first elected in 2020 and currently serving his third term representing a district covering southwestern Miami-Dade County, including Kendall and Homestead, and the Florida Keys. Born in Havana, Cuba, Gimenez came to the United States with his family as a child and settled in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood. He served for 25 years in the Miami Fire-Rescue Department, including as Chief of Fire-Rescue for nine years, modernizing the department and overseeing its largest reorganization in history. He then served as City Manager of Miami from 2000 to 2003, when he helped raise the city's bond rating from junk to investment grade while reducing taxes. Gimenez served as a Miami-Dade County Commissioner from 2003 to 2011 and as Mayor of Miami-Dade County from 2011 to 2020. In the 119th Congress, he serves as Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation and Maritime Security and on the Armed Services Committee and Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party, focusing on border security, Cuba policy, and maritime security.
