Catherine Cortez Masto is Nevada's senior Democratic senator and the first Latina ever elected to the U.S. Senate, serving her second term with focus on tourism, water, and tribal issues.
Catherine Marie Cortez Masto is the senior U.S. Senator from Nevada, a Democrat first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2022. A native of Las Vegas, Cortez Masto earned degrees from the University of Nevada, Reno and Gonzaga Law and worked as a federal prosecutor and chief of staff to Governor Bob Miller before being elected Nevada attorney general in 2006, a position she held for two terms. In 2016, she became the first Latina ever elected to the U.S. Senate. She serves on Finance, Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, Commerce, Science and Transportation, Energy and Natural Resources, and Indian Affairs committees in the 119th Congress, with a chair position on the Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on Public Lands, Forests, and Mining. Cortez Masto has focused on Nevada's tourism and hospitality sectors, public lands and water resources, combating human trafficking, and supporting Nevada's tribal communities. She remains a prominent Latina voice in the Senate.
