United States Senator from DE

Chris Coons is Delaware's senior Democratic senator since 2010, a bipartisan foreign policy leader and intellectual property advocate serving on key oversight committees.
Christopher Andrew Coons, a Democrat first elected in a 2010 special election to fill the seat vacated when Joe Biden became vice president, and re-elected in 2014 and 2020, represents Delaware's senior Senate seat. A Yale Law and Yale Divinity School graduate and former W. L. Gore company counsel, Coons served as New Castle County executive before his Senate career. In the 119th Congress, he serves on Foreign Relations, Appropriations, Judiciary, Small Business, and Ethics committees, with particular influence as chair of the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee. Widely regarded as one of the Senate's most bipartisan members, Coons has been deeply engaged in U.S. policy toward Africa, human rights, development financing, and judicial confirmations. As of January 2025, he became Delaware's senior senator following Tom Carper's retirement and was succeeded as Ethics Committee chair. His continued focus on bipartisan foreign policy and intellectual property issues affecting Delaware's corporate interests positions him as a centrist voice in Senate deliberations.
