Biography

Gary Palmer represents Alabama's 6th District, a Republican engineer and former think-tank director who recently stepped down as Republican Policy Committee chairman.

Gary James Palmer is the U.S. representative for Alabama's 6th Congressional District, a Republican elected in 2014 serving his sixth term. A Hackleburg native with an operations management degree from the University of Alabama, Palmer worked as an engineer before co-founding and leading the Alabama Policy Institute, a free-market think tank, for more than two decades. He previously served as chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee, part of GOP leadership, until the 119th Congress began in 2025. Palmer sits on the Energy and Commerce Committee and focuses on energy policy, environmental regulation, federalism, and conservative fiscal and social policy. His background in policy research and strategic analysis informs his approach to legislation addressing regulatory reform, energy independence, and the role of government in market economies.
