Gary Peters is a Democratic Michigan senator, Navy Reserve veteran, and former House member known for bipartisan oversight work serving his second term.
Gary Charles Peters serves as the senior U.S. Senator from Michigan, a Democrat first elected in 2014 and re-elected in 2020. A Pontiac native, Peters worked in financial services with an MBA and multiple professional credentials, and served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, including a tour in Kuwait during the Iraq War era. He served in the Michigan State Senate, as Michigan lottery commissioner, and for three terms in the U.S. House before winning his Senate seat. In the 119th Congress, Peters serves as ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and also sits on Armed Services, Commerce, and the Joint Economic Committee. He led the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee through the successful 2022 and 2024 cycles defending incumbents and retaking majority control. Peters announced in January 2025 that he will not seek re-election in 2026, ending a distinguished career focused on the auto industry, Great Lakes protection, federal oversight, and bipartisan legislation with a strong record of enacting bills with Republican co-sponsors.
