Gwendolynne Sophia Moore was born in Racine, Wisconsin, in 1951, the eighth of nine children of a union factory worker and public school teacher. She earned her degree from Marquette University and worked as a community organizer and in housing policy before her election to the Wisconsin State Assembly, where she served from 1991 to 1993. She then represented the 4th district in the Wisconsin State Senate from 1993 to 2005, becoming the first African American woman to serve in that body. Now serving her eleventh term, Moore represents a majority-minority district covering most of Milwaukee. She serves on the House Ways and Means Committee, the oldest and most prestigious committee in Congress, and focuses on poverty, housing, women's issues, and civil rights, leveraging her background in community development and social policy.
