Jahana Hayes is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Connecticut's 5th District, the first Black woman to represent Connecticut in Congress and a former National Teacher of the Year.
Jahana Hayes is the U.S. Representative for Connecticut's 5th Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 2018 serving her fourth term representing western Connecticut including Waterbury, Danbury, and New Britain. Born and raised in Waterbury public housing, Hayes earned degrees from Southern Connecticut State University, the University of Saint Joseph, and the University of Bridgeport and taught high school history for more than a decade. She was named National Teacher of the Year in 2016 and became the first African American to represent Connecticut in Congress. For the 119th Congress, Hayes continues serving on the House Education and Workforce Committee where she focuses on the Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education, and is Ranking Member of the Agriculture Subcommittee on Nutrition and Foreign Agriculture. Her legislative priorities emphasize public education quality, teacher support, child nutrition, and gun-violence prevention.
