James Edward Banks is the junior U.S. Senator from Indiana, a Republican sworn in in January 2025 after winning the seat vacated by the retirement of Mike Braun, who became Indiana's governor. Born in Columbia City, Banks graduated from Indiana University and served in the Indiana State Senate and as a Navy Supply Corps officer, including a deployment to Afghanistan with the reserves. He was first elected to the U.S. House in 2016, representing Indiana's 3rd District, and rose to chair the conservative Republican Study Committee before running for Senate. In the 119th Congress, he serves on Armed Services, Banking, Health Education Labor and Pensions, and Commerce committees. Banks has prioritized manufacturing competitiveness, addressing China's economic challenges, veterans' policy, and conservative positions on cultural and labor issues. He has been active in promoting his legislative agenda focused on strengthening American industry and supporting service members.
