John Hoeven is a Republican North Dakota senator, former two-term governor and bank president, serving his third Senate term.
John Henry Hoeven III serves as the senior U.S. Senator from North Dakota, a Republican first elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2016 and 2022. A Bismarck native and graduate of Dartmouth and Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, Hoeven worked as a commercial banker and as president of the Bank of North Dakota, the only state-owned bank in the United States, before being elected governor of North Dakota in 2000. He served nearly a decade as governor during North Dakota's oil-and-gas economic boom before running for Senate. In the 119th Congress, Hoeven serves on Appropriations, Agriculture, Energy and Natural Resources, and Indian Affairs committees, and chairs the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee. He continues to serve on the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, through which he advances nuclear missions at Minot and space and unmanned aerial systems missions in Grand Forks and Fargo. His legislative priorities include agriculture, energy, tribal policy, border security, and rural infrastructure development.
