John Barry Larson is the U.S. Representative for Connecticut's 1st Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 1998 serving his fourteenth term representing a Hartford-centered district in north-central Connecticut. A native of East Hartford and graduate of Central Connecticut State University, Larson worked as a high school history teacher and insurance agent before serving in the Connecticut State Senate, where he became Senate president pro tempore. In the House he previously chaired the House Democratic Caucus and currently serves on the influential Ways and Means Committee, where he is Ranking Member of the Social Security Subcommittee and has championed his Social Security 2100 legislation to expand benefits and increase the payroll tax cap. His legislative priorities focus on energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, and worker benefits.
