Luz Maria Rivas is the U.S. Representative for California's 29th Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 2024 and currently serving her first term in the 119th Congress representing a San Fernando Valley district anchored in Pacoima and the northeast Valley. The daughter of a Salvadoran immigrant single mother, Rivas grew up in public housing and became the first in her family to attend college, earning an electrical engineering degree from MIT and a master's degree from Harvard's Graduate School of Education. She worked as an engineer and founded DIY Girls, a nonprofit introducing young Latinas to STEM that grew from a single classroom of 30 girls to programs across 17 Los Angeles-area schools. She served in the California State Assembly, where she chaired the Natural Resources Committee. In the 119th Congress she was elected Freshman Leadership Representative by her Democratic peers and focuses on climate resilience, STEM education, housing, and immigration.
