Maggie Hassan is a Democratic New Hampshire senator and former two-term governor serving her second Senate term.
Margaret Wood Hassan serves as the junior U.S. Senator from New Hampshire, a Democrat first elected in 2016 by narrowly defeating Republican incumbent Kelly Ayotte and re-elected in 2022. Born in Boston and educated at Brown and Northeastern Law, Hassan worked as an attorney and as a parent advocate for children with disabilities, drawing on her experience raising a son with cerebral palsy, before being elected to the New Hampshire State Senate, where she rose to majority leader. She served two terms as governor of New Hampshire from 2013 to 2017. In the 119th Congress, Hassan serves on the Finance, HELP, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and Joint Economic committees. She chairs the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Spending Oversight, overseeing the Department of Homeland Security, cybersecurity, and drug interdiction efforts while holding agencies accountable for fiscal responsibility. Hassan has focused on prescription drug pricing, the opioid crisis, disability policy, and bipartisan border and cybersecurity legislation to protect American families and communities.
