Marilyn Strickland is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Washington's 10th District, the first Korean American and African American from the Pacific Northwest.
Marilyn Strickland was born September 25, 1962, in Seoul, South Korea, the only child of Willie and Inmin Kim Strickland, who raised her in a military family. A graduate of the University of Washington and Clark Atlanta University, she served as the 38th mayor of Tacoma from 2010 to 2018 before becoming president and CEO of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce from 2018 to 2019. Now serving her third term, she represents a district covering Olympia, Tacoma's southern suburbs, and portions of Pierce and Thurston counties. She made history as the first Korean American woman and first African American elected to Congress from the Pacific Northwest. She sits on the House Armed Services, Foreign Affairs, and Transportation and Infrastructure committees and focuses on the region's military installations, trade with Asia, and infrastructure investment.
