Martin Heinrich is New Mexico's senior Democratic senator and ranking member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, serving his third term focused on clean energy and national labs.
Martin Trevor Heinrich is the senior U.S. Senator from New Mexico, a Democrat first elected in 2012 and re-elected in 2018 and 2024. A native of Fallon, Nevada who moved to New Mexico after college, Heinrich earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Missouri and worked as a fundraiser for the Cottonwood Gulch Foundation and as a natural-resources trustee. He served on the Albuquerque City Council and as U.S. Representative before winning his Senate seat. In the 119th Congress, Heinrich serves as ranking member of Energy and Natural Resources and maintains positions on Appropriations, Intelligence, and the Joint Economic Committee, while co-chairing the Senate Artificial Intelligence, Fusion Energy, Bicameral Electrification, and International Conservation caucuses. His priorities include clean energy and electrification, public lands and conservation, and stewardship of Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories. He has been a consistent advocate for renewable energy development and effective intelligence oversight.
