Biography

Mike Johnson (R-LA-4) is Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and a constitutional lawyer, serving his fifth term.

James Michael Johnson is the U.S. Representative for Louisiana's 4th Congressional District, a Republican first elected in 2016 and serving his fifth term. A graduate of Louisiana State University and the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center, Johnson practiced constitutional and religious-liberty law with the Alliance Defending Freedom and served in the Louisiana House of Representatives before entering Congress. He represents a northwestern Louisiana district including Shreveport, Bossier City, and Alexandria. In October 2023, after Kevin McCarthy's ouster, Johnson was elected the 56th Speaker of the House and was re-elected as Speaker in the 119th Congress on the first ballot. As Speaker, he sets the House legislative agenda and does not sit on standing committees. His priorities include border security, support for Israel, conservative social policy, and fiscal restraint.
