United States Senator from WA

Patty Murray is the junior U.S. Senator from Washington, a senior appropriator elected President Pro Tempore Emerita after making history as first female to hold that position.
Patricia Lynn Murray, Washington's junior senator since 1993, has been a pioneering force in the Senate as a longtime senior appropriator and the first woman to hold the position of President Pro Tempore. A Bothell, Washington, native and Washington State University graduate, Murray worked as a preschool teacher and parent advocate, famously dubbed 'just a mom in tennis shoes' by a dismissive state legislator she later defeated in her first Senate race. Elected as part of the 1992 'Year of the Woman,' she was re-elected in 1998, 2004, 2010, 2016, and 2022. Murray served as President Pro Tempore from 2023 through 2024, making history as the first woman in American history to hold that role, honored with the designations of President Pro Tempore Emerita in the 119th Congress. She chairs or serves on the Appropriations, HELP, Budget, and Veterans' Affairs committees. Her legislative focus includes education, reproductive rights, veterans' health care, transportation infrastructure, and federal support for Washington's aerospace, technology, and agricultural sectors.
