Rand Paul is Kentucky's junior Republican senator and Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, known for his libertarian-leaning positions.
Randal Howard Paul is the junior U.S. Senator from Kentucky, a Republican first elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2016 and 2022. The son of former Representative and presidential candidate Ron Paul, Rand Paul is a Duke-trained ophthalmologist who practiced in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and was active in libertarian-leaning politics before running for Senate during the Tea Party wave. In the 119th Congress, he chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and serves on Foreign Relations, Health Education Labor and Pensions, and Small Business committees. As chairman, Paul has prioritized government accountability and has worked on renewing the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act. He has built a national profile through his opposition to federal spending, surveillance programs, foreign intervention, and executive overreach, and through his annual government-waste reports. He ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016 and has often been an independent voice within the Senate GOP.
