Ritchie Torres is a Democrat representing the South Bronx in New York's 15th District since 2020, one of the first openly gay Afro-Latino members of Congress.
Ritchie John Torres, U.S. Representative for New York's 15th Congressional District, is a Democrat first elected in 2020 serving his third term representing the South Bronx, one of the poorest congressional districts in the country. At his first election he became one of the first two openly gay Black men elected to Congress and the first openly gay Afro-Latino member of Congress. Torres grew up in public housing in the Bronx and served on the New York City Council beginning at age 25, chairing the Public Housing Committee before his congressional election. In the 119th Congress, he serves on the House Financial Services and Homeland Security committees and as Vice Chair of the Homeland Security Committee. His bipartisan housing legislation passed the House in 2025, securing over $18 million in FY26 community project funding for the Bronx.
