Roger Wicker is a Republican Mississippi senator and chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, a senior defense appropriator serving his fourth term.
Roger Frederick Wicker serves as the junior U.S. Senator from Mississippi and chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee in the 119th Congress, the first Mississippian to chair this powerful committee since Senator John C. Stennis held the position from 1969 to 1981. Originally appointed in December 2007 to fill the seat vacated by Trent Lott and elected in a 2008 special election and to full terms in 2012, 2018, and 2024, Wicker is a Pontotoc native and graduate of the University of Mississippi and its law school. He served as a judge advocate in the Air Force and U.S. Air Force Reserve, retiring as a lieutenant colonel, before serving in the Mississippi State Senate and seven terms in the U.S. House. As Armed Services chair, Wicker oversees 27 committee members and seven subcommittees and leads defense innovation initiatives. He also sits on Commerce, Environment and Public Works, and Rules committees. Wicker has focused on shipbuilding at Ingalls in Pascagoula, broadband and rural infrastructure, aerospace, and U.S. support for Ukraine and deterrence of adversaries.
