United States Senator from AZ

Ruben Gallego is Arizona's junior Democratic senator sworn in January 2025, a Marine Corps Iraq War veteran and former congressman who defeated Kari Lake.
Ruben Gallego, a Democrat sworn in January 2025 after defeating Republican Kari Lake in 2024, became the first Latino to represent Arizona in the U.S. Senate. Born in Chicago to Colombian and Mexican parents and raised in challenging circumstances, Gallego earned his Harvard degree, enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve, and deployed to Iraq with one of the war's hardest-hit units, earning combat experience that shaped his later legislative focus. After service in the Arizona House, he represented a Phoenix-based House district for a decade before his Senate campaign. In the 119th Congress, Gallego serves on Banking, Energy and Natural Resources, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, and Veterans' Affairs committees, where he concentrates on housing affordability, border policy reform, Arizona water security, and veterans' support. His background in combat service and urban policy positions him as a voice on military readiness and community resilience issues facing the Southwest.
