Sanford Bishop is a Democratic U.S. Representative from Georgia's 2nd District, a senior appropriator and leader of the Blue Dog Coalition of moderate Democrats.
Sanford Dixon Bishop Jr. is the U.S. Representative for Georgia's 2nd Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 1992 and currently serving his seventeenth term representing a southwest Georgia district including Albany, Columbus, and many rural counties. Born in Mobile, Alabama, Bishop graduated from Morehouse College with a B.A. in political science and from Emory University School of Law with a J.D., and practiced law in Columbus, Georgia. He served more than a decade in the Georgia General Assembly before entering Congress. He is a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee and serves as Ranking Member of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Subcommittee, leveraging his extensive expertise to advocate for farm programs and food security. He is also a respected leader of the Blue Dog Coalition of moderate Democrats. His legislative priorities include peanut and row-crop agriculture, the Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany and Fort Moore military installations, rural development, and support for historically Black colleges and universities.
