Biography

Democratic U.S. Representative from Texas's 29th District since 2019; first Latina elected from Texas to Congress serving on Judiciary.

Sylvia R. Garcia is the U.S. Representative for Texas's 29th Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 2018. Along with Veronica Escobar, she became one of the first two Latinas elected to Congress from Texas. A Texas Woman's University graduate and Thurgood Marshall School of Law alumna, Garcia worked as a judge, Houston's city controller, Harris County Commissioner, and Texas State Senator before her congressional election. She represents a heavily Hispanic district covering east Houston and Pasadena. Garcia served as a House impeachment manager during President Trump's first impeachment trial and sits on the House Judiciary and Financial Services committees. She won reelection in 2024 with 65% of the vote and faced a redrawn district in 2026, winning her March primary with 58.2%.
