Tammy Baldwin is the senior U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, the first openly LGBTQ person elected to the Senate, serving her third term.
Tammy Suzanne Green Baldwin, Wisconsin's senior senator since 2013, has advanced LGBTQ rights and working-family economic issues throughout her congressional career. A Madison, Wisconsin, native and graduate of Smith College and the University of Wisconsin Law School, Baldwin practiced law and served on the Dane County Board of Supervisors and in the Wisconsin State Assembly before winning election to the U.S. House in 1998, representing Madison-based Wisconsin's 2nd District for seven consecutive terms. In 2012, she became the first openly gay person and first woman from Wisconsin elected to the U.S. Senate. Re-elected in 2018 and 2024, Baldwin has risen to senior Democratic leadership roles. She serves as secretary of the Senate Democratic Caucus since 2017. In the Senate she sits on the Appropriations, HELP, and Commerce committees and has focused on Buy America procurement provisions, dairy policy, manufacturing competitiveness, and prescription drug costs. Baldwin was a lead author of the 2022 Respect for Marriage Act, legislation that codified federal recognition of same-sex marriage nationwide.
