Thom Tillis is a Republican North Carolina senator, former state House speaker and management consultant known as a bipartisan dealmaker serving his second term.
Thomas Roland Tillis serves as the senior U.S. Senator from North Carolina, a Republican first elected in 2014 by defeating incumbent Democrat Kay Hagan and re-elected in 2020. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Tillis built a career as a management consultant, eventually as a partner at IBM and PricewaterhouseCoopers, before settling in Cornelius, North Carolina. He served on the Cornelius town board and in the North Carolina House of Representatives, rising to speaker from 2011 to 2015 and leading an ambitious Republican legislative agenda. In the 119th Congress, Tillis serves on the Judiciary, Banking Housing and Urban Affairs, Finance, Armed Services, and Veterans' Affairs committees. He chairs the Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property and the Finance Subcommittee on Taxation and IRS Oversight, and chairs the Armed Services Personnel subcommittee. Tillis has cultivated a reputation as a dealmaker on issues including the 2022 Respect for Marriage Act, bipartisan gun-safety legislation, and immigration reform.
