Valerie Foushee is a Democratic U.S. Representative from North Carolina's 4th District and former law enforcement officer.
Valerie P. Foushee is the U.S. Representative for North Carolina's 4th Congressional District, a Democrat first elected in 2022 serving her second term representing Durham, Chapel Hill, and surrounding Research Triangle communities. Foushee began her career in law enforcement as one of the first Black women officers in the Chapel Hill Police Department before transitioning to public service. She served on the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, and both chambers of the North Carolina General Assembly. In the 119th Congress, Foushee serves on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee as ranking member of the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee and member of the Energy Subcommittee, and the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. She is also active in the New Democrat Coalition AI Working Group and the House Bipartisan AI Task Force. She focuses on education, research funding, STEM workforce development, and civil rights.
