Vern Buchanan is a Republican U.S. Representative from Florida's 16th District, a self-made businessman with automobile dealerships and an Air National Guard veteran.
Vernon Gale Buchanan is the U.S. Representative for Florida's 16th Congressional District, a Republican first elected in 2006 and currently serving his tenth term representing a Southwest Florida district including Sarasota and Manatee counties. Graduated from Cleary University with a B.B.A. and from the University of Detroit with an M.B.A., Buchanan joined the Michigan Air National Guard in 1969, serving six years before building a self-made business empire in automotive dealerships across Florida. Starting in 1992, he acquired multiple Honda, Acura, and other dealerships, generating hundreds of millions in annual sales before selling five dealerships in 2006 to focus on politics. He is a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, serving as Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Health Subcommittee in the 119th Congress, and focuses on tax policy, small business, animal welfare, and the Gulf Coast environment. Buchanan announced in January 2026 that he would not seek re-election, instead planning to pursue the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate to challenge incumbent Jon Ossoff.
